3 Postdoctoral Positions in Law in the areas of Climate, Environment, Ocean and Food Transition

The Centre for Climate Change Law and Governance (CLIMA) at the Faculty of Law, University of Copenhagen, is seeking applicants for three postdoctoral positions in law. The positions are part of two research projects: SeaPact and BETRUE.

The three positions are:

  • Two postdoctoral positions in SeaPact, each with a 36-month employment period and a start date of 1 September 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.
  • One postdoctoral position in BETRUE, with a 24-month employment period and a start date of 1 September 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.
About the projects
Across climate, ocean and food-system transitions, legal and institutional frameworks play a decisive role in shaping how ambitious policy goals are translated into practice. CLIMA offers an international and collaborative environment for legal research on sustainability transitions and hosts projects that connect doctrinal legal analysis with empirical, interdisciplinary and policy-oriented research.

SeaPact - Pollution at Sea: Vessel Impacts and Regime Interaction in Ocean, Climate and Biodiversity Law – funded by the Danish Research Council and in collaboration with Copenhagen Business School, examines how international law responds to vessel-based pollution through two complementary work packages. The project studies, first (Postdoc 1) the regulation of scrubbers and the interaction between air pollution, climate and ocean law, and second (Postdoc 2), vessel-based marine litter and the interaction between ocean and biodiversity law. SeaPact combines doctrinal and empirical legal methods, including document analysis and interviews, and is embedded in an international research environment with workshops, dissemination activities and research stays.

BETRUE - From Beef to bean: the potential of "true pricing" as an instrument for systemic change in the transition to plant-based alternatives - is an international consortium project selected for funding under the FutureFoodS co-funded call (EU). The consortium brings together expertise in law, public health, economics and consumer psychology and combines interdisciplinary research, experiments and policy engagement to examine how true pricing can support the protein transition. The Copenhagen postdoc (Postdoc 3) will contribute the legal and governance perspective within the consortium.

About the positions
We are seeking three enthusiastic and outstanding postdoctoral candidates with strong research profiles in law and a clear interest in sustainability transitions. The successful candidates will join the wider research environment at CLIMA and will be expected to carry out independent research while contributing actively to collaborative research activities.

  • SeaPact WP1 - Shipping, Climate and Ocean Law. The postdoctoral researcher will develop and carry out an independent research project within SeaPact WP1. The position focuses on the regulation of scrubbers and related problem-shifting between air and marine pollution. Tasks include mapping and analysing the interaction between overlapping legal regimes, including UNCLOS, MARPOL, the London Convention and Protocol, the international climate change regime, regional seas conventions and relevant EU law; examining implementation and ongoing law-making processes; conducting interviews with relevant actors such as coastal states, port authorities, industry and other stakeholders; collaborating closely with the PI, Co-PI and the wider SeaPact network.
  • SeaPact WP2 - Marine Litter, Ocean and Biodiversity Law. The postdoctoral researcher will develop and carry out an independent research project within SeaPact WP2. The position focuses on vessel-based marine litter and the interaction between ocean and biodiversity regimes. Tasks include mapping and analysing the legal frameworks relevant to vessel-based marine litter, including UNCLOS, MARPOL, the London Convention and Protocol, the Convention on Biological Diversity, the proposed global plastics treaty and relevant regional frameworks; examining implementation initiatives and new law-making processes; conducting interviews with relevant actors such as industry representatives, environmental NGOs and international institutions; publishing in leading journals; contributing to policy briefs, workshops and the final conference; and collaborating closely with the PI, Co-PI and the wider SeaPact network.
  • BETRUE - Law and Governance of True Pricing in the Protein Transition. The postdoctoral researcher will be based in Copenhagen and will contribute the legal perspective to the BETRUE consortium. The postdoc will develop and carry out an independent legal research project on the design, implementation and governance of true-pricing instruments and their role in advancing the transition to plant-based alternatives. Tasks include analysing relevant legal and regulatory frameworks at Danish, European and international level; contributing to interdisciplinary work packages and consortium deliverables; engaging with stakeholders and policy-oriented activities; publishing in leading journals and contributing to dissemination outputs; and collaborating closely with consortium partners across disciplines.
